This is Spring?

Spring

We woke up this morning to the chirping of a cute fluffy yellow chick but outside it was snowing and the wind was blowing. Isn't that a contradiction of sorts...this IS the first day of spring isn't it? Yesterday was a gorgeous day...sunny and warm...grass turning green...plants popping up...a good day to be outside on the farm...spring was in the air! We headed into town to pick up supplies for the arrival of 63 chicks early next week...we were at the checkout when we heard very LOUD chirping. A lady and her husband had a lone chick in a little carton that they were returning to the store...seems her son had bought 1 baby chick when they weren't looking and proceeded to take him home while he and his friend whistled and laughed in the back seat so mom and dad wouldn't hear the peeping! Needless to say mom and dad weren't too pleased as they had no place to put the chick and they had 2 cats...so they came back to return the bird. Just as my husband and I were leaving the store I overheard the store clerck saying that she was very sorry but they could NOT take the chick back. The poor people were quite upset as they didn't know what to do. I told my husband what was going on so he said to go back and offer to buy the chick from them since we were already set up for our chicks to arrive...so I did. They were VERY relieved and said they didn't want any money... I could just have it ...so off we went with a fluffy yellow spring chick. As I sit and write this post...he/she is chirping away from the dining room as snow is swirling around the house. This is NOT what I pictured for the first day of spring! The strange thing is tomorrow is to be 43 and sunny and 63 by Tuesday..."Welcome to Kansas" as they say here.

Cute lil chick and how lucky that you were there at that moment and possibly saved his/her lil life! :)

I agree with you on the weather. Crazy! But we used to always say the same in Ohio... one day it could be spring, and the next day back to winter.

We had also a few sunny days, at the moment it's raining, but it's not cold.

I found your blog by reading comments that you left on Two Crazy Crafters. The reference of the farm and baby chicks made me think of my childhood growing up on the farm. We would have babies in the house at different times to take care of . I enjoyed reading your post. We had snow today where we live. Thank you for sharing.

How lucky you are to be on that farm..This city would drive you mad!!! it does me but what can you do..If I could hug Eeyore all would be better..but I have my two darling kittens and one darling husband and it all works out...Blessings my friend, Cynthia

I wandered over here after seeing your comment on Throwback at Trapper Creek... so glad I did! Sorry your first day of spring was less than ideal. We had a wonderful day. Alabama is a wonderful place to live. We've just bought 10 acres on a pond and are just beginning our homesteading adventure. Much fun! We brought home 18 chicks this weekend. :) Melissa

Hi Kelee,

Thanks for visiting! I'm glad you have the same dream of living in the country one day...it's a wonderful dream to have and to work towards...good luck! Yes this is our first spring here on the farm...I wish we had lots of flowers coming up but I'm afraid former owners never did much flower gardening. Hopefully if all goes well we'll have all kinds of bulbs and spring flowers popping up everywhere. Happy spring to you..neighbor and I hope you'll come back to visit us again! Take care. Maura :)

Hi Melissa...welcome! I love Throwback At Trapper Creek...its such a wonderful blog! I've never been to Alabama...one day my husband will have to explore that part of the country. My husband was stationed in St Petersburg Florida in the early 70's and I believe he's travelled through Alabama...now it's time for him to take me! I'm glad you had a beautiful day for the first day of spring...lucky girl! Have fun with your chickens....I LOVE mine. We only have 7 adults now 6 hens laying and one beautiful rooster and now our little chick. Sometime early this week we'll be recieving 63 chicks...should be prett exciting and noisy around here then. What a beautiful place you've moved to...congratuations!!! I wish we had more land but for now this is perfect for us...just lots of work. Enjoy your farm! Take care...Maura :)
