Cottage
What is it about the word 'COTTAGE' that we love?
I looked up the meaning of the word 'cottage' and depending on what you are looking for...here are are a few of the definitions.
COTTAGE HOME
A small, single storied house especially in the country.
(check)
COTTAGE STYLE
Exudes charm and comfort
(I think so)
COTTAGE BEDDING
Has comfort and warmth
(comfort yes... warmth...depends on the season!
I think the word 'cottage' has different meanings for different people.
In my case...I live in a small single storied home in the country. Not everyone lives in such a small home or lives in the country...but yet to them their home is a 'cottage'.
These cottage style bedrooms EXUDE Charm and Comfort
don't you think?
I'm seeing a pattern here in my choices of photo's.
It seems I really like white or light coloured bedding and light airy rooms!
(Our guest room)
I'm working on our guest bedroom. I haven't done a thing to it other than paint before we moved in, everything is what we had before and it's in here because it needed a place to go if I was going to keep it.
I've got to paint the wicker bench at the end of the bed and I'm trying to decide if I should paint some other things...like the natural pine and green dresser...the wicker and metal chair and the hardest decision to make is whether to paint that little vanity with mirror. It's dark oak. I'm REALLY having trouble with that one.
I WILL spray paint that floor lamp base next to the bed white.
Anyway...I think I've asked before but I would REALLY like your imput on what you would do if it was YOUR room.
Don't be shy...just say what you think. Give me your ideas.
Here's a few more photo's of the room.
So there you have it.
I hope you've enjoyed looking at those first cottage bedrooms.
I look forward to seeing what your ideas are for our guest room and I hope you have a WONDERFUL Thursday.
Maura :)

Hi Miss Maura, Happy Thursday.
The light green with pink & roses is gorgeous. It would make a lovely master bedroom.
Our first choice (we are all country girls, misplaced right now but we are planning to go back up north in a few years)is The Bunny Room. It's country, warm & inviting. Being naughty and sent to our room (there) takes on a whole new meaning of "naughty bears". (o:
They are ALL beautiful and it's just a matter of personal likes. Thank you for sharing, it was so refreshing looking at those photos and day dreaming.
Big hugs,
Prudence & Sissy
Mom too, of course.
my “guest room” is a mess room..not pretty at all. it’s a catch all for my junk....Hey help me out. I’m a “runner up” over at Tongue in Cheek...vote for Me!!! I really want something from Corey....!!
Maura, I am very interested to see what you end up doing with your guest room. I have two kids in college, and in a couple more years I will be changing their rooms to be more suitable guest rooms. In some ways I don't want to think about that, but also look forward to redecorating. Hard for a mom to accept that her kids will not be living at home anymore.
I'm working on our guest room too, so this really interested me. I have twin four poster beds - old ones that could be more interesting if I painted them. I've bought white matelasse covers and shams and would like to add colour in the dust ruffle, toss cushions and perhaps a throw at the foot of each bed. I like the creamy yellow walls, but the sort of grey walls with the black toile dust skirt caught my eye too.
Honestly Maura...if it were me, I would paint the wicker bench at the end of the bed, the floor lamp base, the wicker and metal chair as well as the natural pine and green dresser all white, but I wouldn't touch the dark oak vanity with mirror. I would love to co-ordinate the knobs on the dresser with the vanity. Keep the pale lemon walls and add more blue accessories to match your quilt...and perhaps a touch of blue and white gingham.
Well you did ask! Now I'll just crawl back into hiBEARnation, LOL!
Warmest Hugs,
Sandi @ Bearly Sane
I agree with Bearly Sane...
I would leave that beautiful dressing table with the mirror alone. Since I have antiques, I struggle with painting any of them, but then I love the color of wood. However if you painted the wood, I would come back and sand some of the paint off to give it a more worn look. Closet space is important too.
Cottage style for me has always been about the color palatte. Shades of cream, white, pale blue, pale green and pale yellow. You have the right bedding so I would bring out the colors in your spread. Love, love the pale yellow walls.
If you sit in the room just imagine that you are the guest and then add all of the necessities that you would need. Towels, soaps, scrubbies, bath salts, candles and maybe even a robe. I would set up a guest basket with the items they would need. Make sure to have some good books to read available and a comfy chair with a table and lamp. You could add shelving above the widows is you wanted to display any collections. And don't forget your guest need a place for their luggage and any bed pillows or bunnies to store.
I look forward to your cottage concepts and desings. Sounds wonderful.
Maura, You have a delightful blog! I love all the cottage bedrooms you posted! I love the look of wood on real antiques. I would paint other things first. I think white or painted rooms need some wood to give it richness and ground it!
So lovely to stop by tonight!

Hi Maura, there is this great blog: http://primitiveandproper.blogspot.com/
Have you been there? She does such an incredible job with all her furniture make-overs. You will surely get some ispiration from her! I can't wait to see what you do.
I love the light airy look of cottage. It's all the things that appeal to me, crisp and clean and heirloom...all in one! Your new background is sooo pretty! Have a great weekend sweetie!
I love the cottage look, too. Our home has more of a cabin feel, but I'd love to make it a cottage. When it comes to decorating I'm afraid I'm clueless. I love your guest room, and your hugging bunnies!
To get the heart hold down Alt and hit the number 3 on your numbers board-thingy, to the right of keyboard. It doesn't seem to work with the numbers above the letters. I hope that made sense.
Have a wonderful weekend my dear friend!♥
Those rooms are absolutely dreamy! Lovely! :-)
Have a wonderful weekend!
Hugs,
Anne
Beautiful! I don't see much I'd change, Maura. I love the white wicker - and the distressed look is quite 'in' right now. I'm not sure I'd bother painting them. And the oak vanity - I wouldn't touch it! It's gorgeous. And the wood is beautiful even if it wouldn't be your first choice of stain. I believe a little contrast in color helps to anchor a room. I have so many different wood colors here that it isn't funny. I have MUCH trouble painting old wood. Seems criminal in my book. ; ) I would invest my time and money into getting the bedding you desire. After all, isn't that what your guest will most appreciate? Hope your weekend is fabulous and relaxing! : ) Melissa
Gosh, Maura, I think it's lovely just the way it is! Thank you so much for your birthday wishes, I appreciate it! Have a nice weekend! Twyla
Me thinks we have the same tastes!
xoxo

I agree with Bearly Sane on the colors. I really like the contrast of the dark wood against the yellow and with the white. It's such a "homey" room right now, I wouldn't change much. It sure was wonderful when I was in it in the Victorian in Halstead. Right down to the beautiful little bowl of fragrances and soaps you had on the dresser beside the bed. I would tell you to just go with your instincts because they are awesome! I'll be happy to come no matter what!! Love you...Scufty
I'm sitting at my iMac in our guest room... the carpet is Nasty in here (yes, with a capital N), needs ripped out, the whole room needs repainted. I'm opting for the white/cream scheme too. I love the openness and it really works well with small rooms.
Your guest room looks wonderful already, I'm not sure if I would go overboard with redoing everything. It's all personal taste I guess. :-)
I've just been searching the web for some inspiration to decorate our bedroom (and eventually living room) and I have thoroughly enjoyed what you've done with your wee cottage. I share some of the photos with my husband to get an idea of color combinations as well. Thanks! Samantha MacKenzie
