We Ain't In Kansas Anymore Toto!

Well Actually we are.

My sister in law Donna and I took a road trip to the Gypsum Hills of Barber County Kansas with our good friend Tom.
Mr Fixit told me that I wouldn't believe I was in Kansas anymore and boy was he right
we could have been in parts of Wyoming or Colorado or where ever because this sure didn't look like the Kansas I had seen so far!

It was beautiful!

Not that Kansas isn't beautiful...it is...but when you lived for over 30 years in the mountains of British Coloumbia you tend to judge beautiful scenery by mountains or rolling hills and forest.

I was drawn in by this beautiful unexpected scenery.

This is the picture most of us imagine Kansas to look like.
Our State Flower

On our way home Tom asked if we'd like to see Greensburg.
Most of us remember Greensburg Kansas when it was hit by an F5 tornado in 2007 and over 95% of the city was destroyed.

This is how Greensburg looked yesterday

It was a very busy town with LOTS of construction happening everywhere.

This John Deere dealership is owned by a cousin and her husband
it was totally destroyed by the tornado.

Life goes on

And we head home.

I've never been to Kansas, but didn't imagine it as a beautiful place - so nice to see your photos and read about your trip. Isn't it amazing to see how people recover after a something as destructive as a hurricane or tornado? The capacity to pick up and move forward is humbling.

Hello Pondside! The pictures of Greensburg didn't do the town justice...there is so much more going on there right now with stores and other businesses open. There are new houses everywhere and new landscaping and tree's. It's very humbling to see..you wonder how they do it. The pictures of Kansas don't do the State justice either...this area also reminds me of around Kamloops BC. I've mentioned this before..but my father used to love visiting us in British Columbia and travelling on the logging roads in the mountains and the fresh water in the streams but when it came right down to it this is really how he felt..."The mountains are beautiful...but they get in the way of the view." As they say 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Kansas really is beautiful...you just have to open your eyes and see it. I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend!

It always strikes me how much we all want to travel to exoctic places. Other countries. When the USA is just that. Our states are so vastly different from one another. So much to see; and sooo much we never dreamed of when we get there! Your Kansas is stunning! Thanks for a mini tour! And the sunflowers? My fave flower ever!
I got your email. So happy the tickets got there :)
Wonderful day to you, Maura! xo, misha

I love these pictures and very much agree that beauty is everywhere if we just lift our eyes to see it.

Sometimes, I don't think SE Georgia is so lovely. I was born in the mountains and it's a bit flat and uninteresting, but there IS beauty when I look.

I love the story and pictures of the town that survived and THRIVED.

It's wonderful when a town rebuilds and doesn't just give in, give up.
The countryside you toured looks lovely. I've never been to Kansas, either.
Thanks so much for sharing your road trip with us, Maura. I love pictures!
Have a great weekend! Hugs.
