Stone Walls

I have a love of stone walls. Not the new ones you see built today mostly in new neigborhoods to keep the sound of traffic at bay... I mean OLD MOSSY stone walls. Walls that have been around for hundreds and in some cases.. thousands of years.

Unfortunately we don't have an old stone wall here at the farm.
But we do have old stones.

I've been working with stones lately putting in edging. Not the store bought stones you see at the
big home improvement stores...old stones that have come from old homes and farms.
Some of the stones were about 30 inches long 12 inches deep and wide and according to Mr Fixit weighed around 150-160lbs. Those ones HE lifted into place!
I can't imagine lifting stones like that high on a wall and then having to move them around to fit just right.

You have to admire a stone wall...especially the ones built long long ago. Nowadays the stones are cut
by machines but back then they only had chisels or other rocks to break them to the size and shape needed.

Hadrians Wall is one of those old walls.
It was built by the Romans in the north of England near the border with Scotland around AD 122
and runs from the east to the west coast for 73 1/2 English miles.
The wall was to be 10 feet wide by 15-20 feet tall starting in the east
but got smaller as it went further west. It took around 6 years to complete.

My Grandmother was born near Newcastle Upon Tyne not far from the wall.
I have a stone from that wall.
(Now it is a World Heritage Site and I would imagine taking stones would be frowned upon!)
It's not a very large stone but you can see that it is old and for nearly 2,000 years it was part of that wall.

My Ancient Stone From The Wall

Maybe one day we'll make a stone wall and if we do a good job hopefully someone many years from now will admire it and appreciate the effort it took to make it.

Do  you have a stone wall?

Maura, I very much enjoyed your beautiful stone wall photos. Thanks for sharing. I, too, love old stone walls and really, anything old that has stood the test of time.

And I absolutely love the new song on your blog, and your new lilac photo with the butterfly. This is a cozy little place that I enjoy visiting. Thanks for sharing! : ) Melissa

OK... I think you live inside my brain. Once again, you love the same thing(s) that I do. I grew up in an area with many old stone walls. Unfortunately, stone is very scarce where we live now so you don't see very much of it.

I love the pictures that you posted, and I am so jazzed that you have a stone from that wall.

No but I do love them. We have found a few old stones hidden around the pond and put them to use but not as a wall. Now there's a post idea! Thanks! ; )

Hello Sweet Friends!

Melissa I'm so glad you find my little blog 'cozy'...I've tried hard to make it a happy place for fellow bloggers to come and vist. I thought this photo was fitting for the site and the song went right with it. I'm glad you like it. It's a 'feel good' dong isn't it. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Debbie I'm so glad you like the post about the stone walls. There's just something about them that get's to me...bagpipe music hits me the same way! Stone is pretty scarce here too but we were given most of our large stones from a friend who had collected them over the years. The rest are from the farm here and I wonder if they were used for an old barn foundation at one time. Enjoy your day and I look forward to having another visit with you!

Andrea...Hello! LOL I'm glad you got an idea for a post from seeing the old stones here today...I'm looking forward to seeing what you write about the old stones on your farm! I hope you're having a wonderful day...take care.

Hi Catherine! I know what you mean about the stone walls in Cornwall and Scotland...both places are FULL of stones...I can't imagine what it's like to dig up a new garden in either place! Devon had a lot of stone too. Oh how I'd LOVE some stones from over there to put in my garden...maybe from an old castle. Wouldn't that be wonderful! I've never been to Wales but I've seen some beautiful pictures. I could always bring a few stones back from British Columbia every year...maybe I'd have that rock wall before I was too old to make it! One day I'll get over to France and just tour the countryside with my sister and see your rock walls for myself. We'll pick you up and bring you with us...sounds fun to me! Take care my friend....Maura :)

Oh boy, I love this post. I have a lovely stone wall surrounding 2 acres on three sides on the property that we some day hope to build on. It is in Manotick, Ontario. I used to visit this property as a child and remember looking between the stones at the moss and little critters that lived there. So much history in those walls. Thanks for posting something that brought back memories of my childhood. Hugs, Deb

How special to have that stone from long ago! So much to love about a stone wall... strength, history, beauty, safety, standing despite hardship of weather and time. I love them too! GREAT POST!
