Cats Bees Digging Holes and Dust storms

Oliver

It's been busy around the farm this past long weekend.
Now that we've sold one of our farm buildings Mr Fixit has had some major work to do moving water lines etc as the bladder tank for water to the house was in that building. This morning he moved it to the house.

The building we just sold is 40'X180'
Thank heavens the people who bought it will be taking it down!
If you think this one his huge...we have another building that is 30'X240'!

Earlier this weekend he borrowed a 'trencher' and dug trenches all over the yard for 'risers' which are where we get water to water the animals or gardens etc. He put in 5 so we should be in good shape for keeping the lawns green next year. He also ran a new water line to the house.
Thank heavens for our tractor with the backhoe and friends with trenchers!

So now the yard is a mess with trenches that need filling and dirt all over the place plus for the last two days the wind has been howling and we got a good taste of what it was like during the dust storms of the dirty 30's.
What a mess!

I thought I had closed all the windows but unfortunately one was open about 3 inches...so now there is dust everywhere in the house!
Oh well I may as well wait until all the work is done and then do my fall cleaning which is a pain because I cleaned the house from one end to the other before we went on vacation last month!

What was left of our barn after the fire

Last Wednesday we had some fellows come and take away all the metal that was left on the farm by previous owners and what was left of the old barn after the fire. They were here 3 days and they should be back today to pick up the remains of the barn. I'll be glad to see the mess gone so we can move on from here. I really do miss that old barn.

Despite all the mess and work it's been a nice long weekend.
I managed to take some pictures around the farm and some fun ones of the cats. So I hope you'll enjoy the pictures seeing what we've been up to.

Lizzy can sleep anywhere

Poor girl wasn't happy I woke her up to take her picture

We have a bee hive in our corn crib. We'd like to restore it so this winter we'll try and move them to a manmade hive outside. We don't want to loose them though as they keep all the fruit trees well pollinated. While hubby and I were laying water lines I heard a noise and looked over to the corn crib and this is what we saw.
I guess the queen must have been moving around in the wall so they were stirred up.
They soon settled down.

I went out to take pictures of all the dust but got side tracked when Olly came out to see me.

He's such a goof ball!

Handsome fellow.

So I look forward to another week but at least a short one. The weatherman is predicting a 30% chance of storms over the next few days so we'll see if he's right this time.
Goodness knows we could sure use it.
Until then...I need to get outside and back to work filling trenches in this beautiful cool weather.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Maura :)

Miss Maura,

Labor Day was suppose to be a day off, you know, grilling, having a lazy day. Goodness, you worked so hard.

Love Oliver & Lizzy. We love kitties but Jessie is still a little too playful, she just doesn't know her own size. But she will grow up and then we can have a kitty.

Heaps of Hugs

Your Olly is just too cute! The photo of him being a "goofball" is priceless. You really should enter that into a contest. I know I would cast my vote for first place! :) I'm having fun listening to your music here, and I really like your new header and background. Have a wonderful day.

Hello Prudence and Sissy!
Yes you're right it was supposed to be a fun weekend but we did get lots done so we could have fun this next weekend. I'll have to make sure we have a BBQ to make up for working so much although we did BBQ burgers Sunday night...so I guess we weren't all that bad ;) I hope your kitty settles down soon so you can enjoy it like we do Lizzy and Olly. I hope you are having a wonderful day...Mom too! XO

Hi Maureen!
Olly is pretty goofy in that picture isn't he! He's such a good cat and he's soooo gentle with us and even the dogs. Shep get's a little rowdy with him though but I don't ever remember seeing Olly hiss at him but Lizzy is another story! She'll take that big dumb dog on and anything else that want's to cross her path or give her a hard time. I'll have to work on that picture a bit. I was going to open it in Photoshop but I forgot in my rush to get the background changed and header picture and the post done. OH well he's still cute. I hope you've had a wonderful day too and enjoy your evening... Maura :)

Hello Cyn!
I'm glad you liked your birthday ecard...I thought you'd like that puppy. I liked my other header picture but it seemed so big and bright and I liked this picture so thought I'd try it. I wasn't even going to have a background but it looked too plain to me so I tried this one. I think I like it. I'm having fun with photography but I've got so much to learn and some of the ladies who blog are good teachers just by studying their photos. I'm learning lots...now I just need to apply it! I like my Grandkids names too...they're different and they're cute too LOL! Have a great evening Cyn...take care. Maura :)

I once had a beautiful cat that looked like Ollie. She was a doll. You have been very busy. I like the header and your new background. Very nice. I love to view pictures as well. We have had a problem with honey bees drinking and hogging the hummers feeders. ANy suggestions? I think we must have a nest somewhere? You don't have coyotes that will get your cats? I had a fox kill several of my chickens and my cat at our former home. It just made me so sad.

Have a great week Maura. Hugs,Pam

Your Oliver looks just like my Sydney ( sadly no longer with us ), same coloring, expression, and floppy girth ;)
Your kitties Lizzy and Oliver are so sweet...
You've certainly had a hectic time since the barn fire, all that digging and water line fixin' :)
I just love your farm, with all of the animals , I bet it's a wonderland for the grandchildren !
Hugs,
Jo

Maura, you guys have been busy as bees! Ha! It looks like your bees have been busy, too. My, my... that was quite a swarm. You sure do have some tremendous buildings on your property. How fortunate to find someone who was willing to buy one and remove one you didn't want. I'm sure that doesn't happen all the time! It feels so good to make progress around the homestead, doesn't it? Yours is looking good!

Your Oliver is so cute! Cats really do keep us entertained... how can you not chuckle at that cat trying to sleep in that little round thing (whatever it is) that is too small for him?
I'm so glad you are doing what you can to save and move the bees, and not just kill them off. The poor critters have such a tough time of it anyway.
I do not envy you having to start all over with the cleaning. Cleaning really is one of those jobs with no end.

Love those kitty photos!
What a busy post - lots of activity around your house - I guess we could say it's been just buzzing with activity!

Oh I know, weren't those windy days earlier in the week just crazy! Sunday was bad enough, but then Monday was even worse... I worked at the turnpike and the wind was pushing me sideways as I walked out to my booth. Had to keep a really tight grip on the money; didn't lose any, but did chase a few tickets and some dimes that blew away. People don't think loose change will blow, but in 60mph winds, um, yes, it blows away too.

Love the photo of silly Olly. And so sad you lost that cool barn to fire. :-(

A tractor is on our short list of things needed here. It's hard to do effective work on 27 acres without one. I'm jealous of everyone who has a tractor, LOL. We're watching auctions on Purple Wave.com and saving our pennies.

(FYI, my son & his wife live in Ohio, so no, my granddaughter is not close so I can give her hugs and kisses.) And trust me, if you win the giveaway, your pups will just love the Cheesers. I made a big batch yesterday to mail out to someone, and of course, my kids all get some. They LOVE them. :)
