The Big Bathroom Reveal!

Well we finally did it...we're done!

It's been a long 4 weeks renovating
the bathroom but it was well worth it.
We did it all ourselves
plumbing and wiring
putting in bead board
and crown molding
building a cupboard
caulking and painting
and putting in new flooring.
Whew!

So...here are some before and after pictures.

The before pictures really don't
show you how bad the room was.

One of the biggest changes was
putting the bead board on the ceiling.

When we moved in we replaced
the old sink and vanity with one
from Craigslist. It was used
and cheap but it was WAY
better than the old one but when we
got this one home...the sink had cracked
near the top edge. We put up with it
for nearly 2 years.

Rather than put in a vanity and sink
I decided that I wanted a vintage sink.
We made up for the loss of under sink
space by building in a new cupboard.

The old door-less cupboard above
the toilet held a LOT of
things but we decided that
open shelving would be just fine
to keep the space more open.

I like the open shelves.
Now I need a few new towels!

I hated this wall between the shower
and the door...it was so ugly.

Hubby cut a door into that wall so he
could get to the plumbing and then
put on some nice trim and beveled
the edges. I replaced the shower
curtain with one I had bought while
living in our old Victorian home.

It's by Shabby Chic
and I got it cheap
on Ebay ;)

A new coat of paint around the window
trim made them look like new windows.
I bought the cast iron brackets on Ebay
and picked them up about 25 miles away.
I sprayed them creamy white and then glazed them.

I love that bead board.

Hubby made the cupboard
mostly from wood we already had.
I bought more wicker baskets after these
pictures were taken. I've been thinking
of spraying then cream then antiquing them
What do you think?

The walls and ceiling are
Cotton Fluff
by Behr
It's a very soft white with
a yellow tint.

We still have to decide
what we're going to do for
the face cloth and hand towel.

Rather than buy a towel bar I just
got hubby to use a piece of molding.
He cut spots for each towel hook and
I painted and glazed it.

This old pail was found in the old
building we dismantled.
Someone really liked this pail
as there was a hole in the bottom
edge that they filled with a nut and bolt.
I should have taken a picture of it.
For now it works perfectly for holding
extra toilet paper and of course magazines
;-)

This old milk pail was found in the barn
before it burned down.

Now I need to fill these baskets
and buy a few more and get
the rest of the house back
in order!

So...there you have it.
I hope you enjoyed seeing
what we've been up to.

It was a lot of work...but fun.

And I'm so glad it's finished!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Maura :-)

Brilliant job..it is now a lovely bright room with character and style! I think spraying those baskets would show off your shelves more as they would fit in better and not draw attention to themselves. Good idea.

Hi Maura, your bathroom looks beautiful! Wonderful job! I love the paint color, too. We are preparing to start on a bathroom redo ourselves and we are going to install beadboard, too. If ours turns out half as well as yours, I'll be pleased. Have a good weekend.

I am in love with the colors and that beadboard.
We have beadboard throughout the house, I would like it everywhere :)
The cupboard is fantastic, I like those dark baskets, but I'm sure whatever you have in mind to fluff them, will be an added bonus.
It's all so very cozy, and elegant, you've both created a beautiful room !

Maura the new bathroom is stunning! Absolutely gorgeous! I love it all! The two of you did an incredible job and it shows.

As far as your baskets on the shelf - the dark baskets are a great contrast to the rest of the room, but, I know I would paint them to keep the soft, vintage feel you have going in there.

Congratulations on a beautiful remodel!

It's just as cute as can be! Love the brackets, hooks for towels, sink, everything. I would keep all the baskets the same and add rolled towels to the shelves. You guys did an amazing job! Bet your spending lots of time in there even if it's just to admire your work.

Maura, your bathroom turned out great, and I love the fact that you recycled the pails into useful items. The beadboard is a fantastic idea on the ceiling! I personally like the dark baskets on the lighter shelf, but whatever you decide to do will be just gorgeous! You and your hubby are very talented.

Wow Another fantastic job done by you and hubby! Your bathroom could for sure be featured in Better Homes and Gardens. I just love it! I'd leave the baskets as they are or just do a dry brush with a bit of white or cream but I like the contrast. Could you put up more hooks around the sink for the hand towel and wash cloth? What a great idea! So nice that you're both so handy and have such great ideas! It's been awhile since I've been on here but hopefully next week will be catch-up time! Can hardly wait to get down there and use this new bathroom!! Much love....Scufty

Thank you for your kind comments everyone! My husband is going around beaming after reading what everyone has said...I think it's going to his head ;) He really did do a wonderful job though...but he always does. I'm going to have fun looking for things to put in there but for now I just used what I already had. I would have loved to have used the old floor boards but they were very uneven and to put another layer on it would have made quite a height difference. I also would have loved to put hexagon marble tiles on the floor but it just wasn't possible. Oh well I'm happy with the way it turned out anyway. My claw foot tub is still waiting for a master bathroom...this bathroom was too small for it but that's ok as I have big plans for it one day ;) I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Maura - it turned out beautiful! {Sigh} I can't wait until mine is finished. I love the beadboard - adds a wonderful charm. And the cabinet with the baskets is a great idea. We will have some open shelving as well although the bathroom we are re-doing is smaller than yours, so it will be less shelving. Great inspiration you have given!!

Maura, What a transformation! I just love the bead board, nothing says country and vintage looking to me more than it. You've really brightened up the room and opened it up. Wonderful job. I think painting the baskets cream on that wonderful cabinet your husband built would look awesome. : )

Congrats and well done!

Absolutely & undeniably beautiful work! I love that bead board, too... very nice addition... it really cleans a place up! =)
The dark colored baskets are a nice contrast, but the cream color would look good, too.
The towel bar in my bathroom recently broke, so I've been trying to find something else & you've solved my problem... I would never have thought of that for hanging towels... great idea!!! =)
You & hubby really did a terrific job!!! Congratulations! =)

Fantastic! I think leave the baskets the color they are. You did a great job, the pedestal sink looks great, and you can put pretty things under if you want. I was inspecting the trim work, looks great. great idea on the towel hooks just mounted on a strip of wood. Open shelves look great, love the beadboard, just like you do. Flooring looks great, just a neat little bathroom, totally servicable. No views of the bathtub area? Was that re-done? All in all, what a beautiful room.

Maura @ Kisiwa Creek Photography said...

Hi Joy...no the bathtub wasn't re-done. It still has the old 1940's tub that I'd love to replace with a claw foot but the spot is just too small. I doubt we could find a tub to fit in that space and you can't extend the area because of the door and plumbing. So...the plan is to just re-glaze it once we add on a master bathroom. Our old claw footed tub will go in there. Now lets hope we get to build it! Thanks for your comment :)
