Welcome Little Peeps!

Monday morning I headed to the chicken coop
to see if the eggs under the two setting
hens had hatched.

It was day 21. Nothing.

I went back a couple of hours later
and found this!

Well I actually heard it before
I saw it.

Peep Peep Peep
and then out from under Momma's
wing popped this sweet little head.

Then this little one came out
from the other side!

Two little chicks
exploring their world
for the first time.

And then there were three!

A later trip to the coop revealed
there were 3 little fuzzy chicks.

The little one on it's momma
is a little mixed Black Australorp/
Buff Orpington
and the other two are pure bred
Black Australorp.

Now isn't that the cutest
little 'fuzzy butt' you've
ever seen!

Momma 'Golda Meir'
 is already showing her chicks
how to hunt and peck just like the
big girls do.

Unfortunately the eggs under
'Helen From Hell'
didn't hatch. Two were not
fertilized and two were
but she must not have spent enough
time on her nest keeping them warm
as they were not fully developed.

I put Helen back in with the other chickens.

Today we'll open momma and the chicks
door and they will be allowed to
explore the big wide world
in the safety of their own 'run'.

It should be an exciting day
for the little family
and us too!

:)

Little chicks are the best thing to have around the farm in the spring, aren't they?! We're expecting two more batches this weekend and next week. Can.Not.Wait!

And I swear, if it wasn't for the peeps, I wouldn't have know our little chick was around for the first week!

They're so sweet. I will have to show these pics to the twins. They thought all chicks were yellow and were surprised when ours was brown. : )

Is there anything sweeter in the world than those little baby chicks? It makes me want to pick them up and rub my nose into their soft little feathers. What a proud Mama sitting there. Poor Helen From Hell!;>) xo Diana

Congrats...wonderful to see Maura,
If those little cuties grow up to be like their Mama they'll be mighty fine specimens.
It's lovely to think of them exploring their new world and what a beautiful home they have...they are certainly lucky chicks.
Have fun :D

How lovely, Maura! You are so lucky to have chicks - I'd like some too, but can't risk getting any little fellows in the bunch! There's no telling what my neighbour would do!

Maura,
I wondering if there are farming magazines that take photograph submissions. I think yours would be great in such a place. Beautiful!

I just came over from Muddy Boot Dreams and I'm SO glad I did! I love reading about chickens especially when little fluffy chicks are involved. We can't have chickens here (against zoning ordinances) so I have to live vicariously through others like yourself. Congrats on the little ones!

Maura ~ how sweet is that? Isn't it just a miracle, the birth of a chick. Wow, would have loved to have been there. My girls are just laying hens and we do not have a rooster. But, some day....
