Do I Really want to start?

Country Living

I'm trying psych myself up to start
painting our kitchen cupboards.

I really don't want to start but I
know that once I do ...
I'll be on a 'roll'.

Before I buy paint I need to
find a fabric for under the kitchen
sink.
But that's where I'm having problems.

I need to find the PERFECT patterned fabric
keeping in mind that...

1) It must tie in the colors of the dining room.
2) It needs to have that 'farm cottage' look.
3) It needs to be able to hide dirt from
hubbies...OK.. AND my dirty hands.
4) It needs to be washable.

I haven't found one that jumps
up and says 'pick me!' yet.

But I'm looking.

Decor Pod

Since I'm not going to tear up the
flooring and we have a grayish
floor
I'm thinking of painting the lower
cabinets a soft blue/gray
and the upper cabinets
an aged white.

I wished they were as nice as
the cupboards in these photo's!

We will be adding some molding to
the top and trim to the bottom
and hopefully some brackets
to give them a custom look similar
to the cupboards below.

I'd also like to add some 'legs'
under the lower cupboards
like the ones in the photo above.

For now our counter tops
will have to stay
but hopefully one day we'll replace
them...even if it means touching up
what ever we mess up in the process.

I love all the crown molding in the photo below.
Doesn't this kitchen have character!

The Inspired Room

We will be installing bead-board to
the ceiling and also crown molding
like we did in the rest of the house
including the bathroom.

Romantic Homes

Sure wish we had wood floors
like the photo below.

But...we're being frugal so unless
hubby or I burn a hole in the flooring...
it stays.

Eric Roth

So for now I am scouring Ebay for
the perfect fabric and hopefully one
day soon I'll be pulling out the old
roller and paint brush.

Until then...I'll keep looking for
fabric and inspiration.

Are you looking to start any
home projects in the near future?

Maura :)

You do have a big project in front of you. Kitchens take a lot of time when done right and you apparently are. I am getting ready to do some minor bathroom remodeling. After that my driveway is being torn out and replace. I dread that one. Good luck on your upcoming work.

I've been poised to tackle our kitchen since spring, but I can't seem to find the time. Every time I think I will start, something comes up.

Good luck. I look forward to seeing your finished project.

Just discovered your blog whilst looking at kitchens. Your blog is enchanting! I will be visiting you often. I think creamy white cabinets would be divine, and I love love love beadboard, had tons of it in my last house. When we sold it, the people tore it all down, can you imagine. Oh well, to each his own. Come visit me. Lana www.lifeatwildberrycottage.com ( I don't have a farm, just a suburban ranch, but in my hear I live in a cottage).

Hi Maura,
I must admit to liking the first picture, the material around the sink, is what I would choose, a nice stripe.
Laura Ashley used to have some lovely prints, but sadly since she passed I'm not sure if they are available any longer.
What gorgeous wide plank floors in the last picture.......I want them !!
Good luck with your search, I'm sure whatever you choose it will be perfect.
Hugs,
~Jo

I don't envy you having to paint the kitchen, we did ours a little time back and it was a chore and a half. Not so much the painting, but having to wash everything down with sugar soap beforehand. You don't realise the amount of dirt that accumulates on the all surfaces, even in a well ventilated kitchen.

White seems to be attracting you Maura...but personally out of all these lovely kitchens I like the romantic one the best...I just love the added colour!

Good luck finding your fabric too! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished reno.
Hugs,
Sandi

Dear Maura ~ What wonderful, inspirational photos of kitchens. Enjoy what you have been blessed with and look forward to finding the good deal on the fabric and painting your walls. Paint does a LOT to change a room and our mood. Enjoy the process of creating a new look. I look forward to seeing the pictures. Have FUN.

I love how you think! I just don't have that. Can't wait to see.

It sounds like we are thinking the same thing today! I am not ready to start painting my cabinets just yet. I think I will wait until it is too chilly to be outside. I know that if I start on them now, the weather will turn great for being outside!! LOL!
I am wanting beadboard on the ceiling, too. I don't like the way the previous owner did the ceiling, so it will cover it up! I am wanting to add brackets under my cabinets and along the floor.
Have you checked out Gramma's Calico Cupboard or Sunflower Quilts for fabric? They have tons! Then of course, there's Hancocks and JoAnn's.
After looking at those photos, I think I am ready for a complete makeover! I LOVE the first kitchen!

PS, wasn't this a great day in Oz today?

Thank you for the inspiration...terrific photos I will store away in my "someday I'll have a new kitchen" folder! Now, my heart is set on a new bathroom. It.Is.Awful. Nothing more I can say...dated, yucky, and screaming for help. I'll keep you posted and refer to your recent redo to keep me inspired! -Mary

I need to do what you're doing too. But I can't decide on a cabinet color.
Good luck finding your fabric. I'm sure you'll know it when you see it.
This will be a big project for sure. I look forward to seeing the end result. Maybe it will help inspire me to get going on mine!

I love your inspiration photos. I feel a change in the kitchen coming on too but I just don't know where to start. I know once I start in there it will snowball to the dining room and so on...Good luck finding your fabric.

I have to get rolling on my cabinets too.... our kitchen is in the old "log cabin" portion of out farm cottage, and we exposed the log wall and decided to keep it, so our cabinets are going to be a light stained wood that goes with the logs. I have to stain them and I am poly them and I am dreading it. I almost with I could just paint them like the kitchens in these great photos, but I need to stick with the plan...... :)

I am not starting any major projects right now, but know that I SHOULD be. There always seems much that needs doing in the house, liking getting the upstairs shower fixed once and for all. But as long as we do that, I want to do a complete make-over. I love all the kitchens in those photos. If yours looks anything like those, I would definitely be in love with your kitchen! Ours is just a plain and simple L shape of counter space with a small table in the corner. But when I think back to the teeny tiny kitchen I used to have before we moved, this one is heaven on earth! I hope you find the fabric that you are looking for soon. When you see one, you will Just know that IT is THE one!! Don't you love it when that happens. Enjoy the hunt!! ~Debby

dear maura,
lovely photographs and i know you'll find the perfect fabric.
i have white cabinets in my kitchen and have found them to be a most impractical color choice that requires a lot of maintenance---cleaning. just a comment and something to consider.

I love each and every one of these kitchens and would be happy with any of them.

Actually last winter we put in Pergo floors, painted, got new windows, new kitchen floor...we are done for now!

I just love all those inspiration pictures! We remodeled our kitchen a few years ago and I'm already wishing I could change some things...not likely at the moment though. Too much work and too much money! I don't sew but I just saw in my latest SOUTHERN LADY magazine that there is a website: www.fabric.com You might want to check it out. I'm off now to read some more of your blog. I'm liking it already!

I painted the cupboards in the kitchen in our old house. It was A LOT of work but worth it in the end. Good luck! Sounds like they will look gorgeous. My own project is my staircase. We ripped the carpet out last year and I have to sand and stain the steps and paint the risers. All before Christmas because I'm having a big dinner on Christmas eve! Gah!!
