Little School House On The Prairie

This past Friday we had to go to Kansas City.
Since my husbands surgery at the VA Hospital there last August (09) we have had to travel there approx. 6 times. It's a 3 hour drive one way.

The good part about the trip is that we have to travel an area that I love. For the most part Kansas is pretty flat but
this particular stretch of the highway passes through beautiful rolling hills.

Along our route is a beautiful old stone school house with two outhouses standing in long grass just off the highway. I have always wanted to stop and take
pictures but we always seem to be in a hurry on the way
to the appointment and on the way back we just want
to get home.

This time however...we stopped!

We had to sqeeze through this gate opening.

It was well worth the effort...it is a beautiful old
building.

Built in 1896

It has two out houses.
A girls and a boys.

Here is the first...

here is the second.

A few details of the first outhouse

The photos above and below are the second outhouse.

Such beautiful details.
It was certainly built to last for many years.
It was very obvious that the building is loved as the roofs
of all three buildings has been replaced with good materials.
It would be interesting to know it's history.

This old school is a bit fancier than the one we used
to see on the TV show 'Little House On The Prairie'
but I could picture Laura and Mary
being very happy going to school here.

Can't you?

Have a wonderful day.

Maura :)

What a sweet little place. How neat would it be to have two little stone outhouses on our properties that we could convert! Sigh.... : )

Maura,
I'm so very happy that you did stop and take photos this trip. How beautiful. "Little House on the Prairie," was one of my favorite shows whilst growing up, and yes, I think Laura and Mary would have been delighted to attend school in such a charming place as this.

What beautiful photos. Very sweet and charming. How many times do we pass by beautiful scenery and think "I'd like to stop and photograph that some day" but never do. I'm making a reminder to myself to stop the next time I find myself saying that.

Hi Maura,
Your post brings back such good memories of when we were stationed in Kansas. Such a wonderful state. We lived in the "hill country" and I loved every minute of it!!
Fondly,

What a beautiful limestone schoolhouse! Where was this one?
I know what you mean about driving by something a gazillion times and never stopping. I am trying to get my husband to enjoy the experience of the trip as much as the destination. I will purposefully plan one stop along the way whenever we go someplace, so that he has to stop and get out and really look at what we are traveling through. I would go exploring through our state every weekend if it were up to me. So much to see.

I'm sure that one of your readers will know the history of this sweet place - I'll bet Martha from Lines From Linderhof will know. You'll find her on my sidebar.

The buildings are beautiful. I have a love of old barns and old schoolhouses. There are a few still standing up through the New England area too. Your pictures are wonderful. It would be fascinating to know the history. Your post touched my heart. Thank you.

Gorgeous stonework on these buildings... are they along I-35 in the Flint Hills? I think I may have seen them on one of my trips to and from Ohio?? Hope your husband is doing better Maura, and kudos to both of you for taking the time to slow down and stop to get the photos. :-)
