Barn Charm #73 And A Barn Conversion


The barn above is one we pass by every time
we travel to Kansas City.

It has a stone foundation on the lower half
and a timber frame above that
with the attached additions
that you see above.

The barn is built into the bank
and looks as solid as a....
well ...a rock!

I've always had a dream of converting
a barn into a home
and can't help wondering how this old
barn would turn out.

I have a feeling it would be wonderful.

Below is a REAL barn conversion
of a 19th century barn 
and horse stable 
owned by realtor

Richard Cifarelli

 The long low building was actually
the horse stable
which Mr Cifarelli has converted
into a beautiful home.
Look at this wonderful kitchen
and dining room....
and what about that
old window that
showcases the chandelier! 



This is an original stable dutch door.
I love all the quirky windows
and the posts.

Below are photo's of the actual 
barn portion that 
will be a future project.
This would be quite the challenge 
and you'd have to have a 
good imagination...or a good architect...
probably both!

With the wonderful job Mr Cifarelli
did in the other areas
I think it would be safe to assume 
that this barn will be amazing
when it is completed. 

I'd LOVE to tackle something like this.

    I adore all these old barns Maura, but I don't think I'd be brave enough to do a conversion on this scale.
    It's a lovely thought though that others do have the vision and can transform these beautiful treasures, so that they can be appreciated for future generations.

    Besides a good imagination, and a good architect, I think you'd need a good fat wallet too!

    I love old barns and it's great to see them restored so beautifully and sympathetically.
    Just need a few quilts hanging on the outside and I would be in Heaven.

    These barns are so beautiful and so unlike anything here where the old barns are made of stone and more modern ones of metal. The converted barn is glorious and done by such a clever man.

    I love converted barns and if money were no problem, I would buy one that was totally renovated. However, all the money in the world would not convince me to tackle such a project.

    Beautiful barn you clicked Maura! Very charming! I would not want to tackle a re-do on a barn to transform it into a home. I just don't have the patience and I hate living in a mess. I barely survived the remodel on our house 7 years ago. Mr. Cifarelli's home is beautiful. I would like to just move in with everything all finished up :)

    I loved this! And I too have had dreams of renovating a barn into a home. Love the open space, vast beams, creating out of what was into "the dream.". Wouldn't the stone base of the first barn be gorgeous inside "your renovation dream?" I think some of the stalls in the undone barn could be made into sleeping bunks . . . Ideas are swirling!

    This is definitely wonderful, absolutely wonderful! It's such a treat to get to see inside, too... He's done an incredible job w/ the transformation! I'd love to get inside & explore every nook & cranny to see all the details of how he transformed the place... Awesome!

    I'm looking for a sliding barn door, myself, for my bathroom & just can't seem to find anyone who has a barn, although there's a lot of them around here!

    I love the first barn built into the hill. I love barns with stone foundations.
    The barn addition turned into a home is gorgeous. Wow! What a transformation. I'm sure the barn itself will be fantastic.

    The barn and other out-buildings look perfect in their sheltered setting.

    Maintaining a barn in good working order is one thing.

    A barn to home conversion would be a major undertaking. It would likely be cheaper to simply rebuild. Saving key components from the old building for the rebuild.

    Hi Maura: Great old barn reno. Can you imagine having all that room. Beautiful. I was perusing some of your older posts (remember I haven't been around that long to see them live). I love your bathroom remodel. It is so bright and full of charm. I didn't think the picture of cupboard top in your header was from a bathroom.     Old Barns seem to hold so much Character ..I am always intrested in the history of them all.

    I can't imagine what it would be like to turn one into a house. I imagine youd have to have a few $$$$ to do it however.
    I was in AWE of what this guy had done, and to live in such a place would be indeed inspiring.

    I would have loved to have been able to convert an old barn if I had the money. Old houses have such character, but an old barn turned old house? Talk about character!! Keeping the bones of the barn is what makes it so unique. And this one done by Mr. C. proves just that. Thank you for sharing, Maura.

    I actually passed a barn yesterday that is being converted, but I couldn't take a photo because it's off a busy highway. Lots of talent and money went into the house you featured, Maura. Beautiful!

    What a great Idea to turn an old barn into something so beautiful.
    My son some years ago turned his barn into bedrooms and open area with kitchinette for guests..
    Mr. C certainly has talent..
    My little cottage is 60 years old..and i renovated and added on to it.. its small and cute.. i love it.
