Old Farm And Will It Ever Be Done?

This is an old abondoned farm that we pass
when ever we head into the
little Amish town not
far from us.

I always feel sad as we drive by
and can't help but wonder what
it's STORY was.

I bet there were cows and chickens
and farm dogs and barn cats
and the wonderful sound of
children's laughter
in the air.

This old barn would have held
lots of hay and sheltered
many an animal
I'm sure.

I wonder if there were once horses
pulling a plow in the
fields.

I'd like to think it was a happy
place where people had dreams
and looked forward to a happy future.

```````````````````````````````
Well...we're still working on our one and
only bathroom here on the farm.
The vanity and sink are out.
This picture above was taken just after I
took the curtain down that covered
this ugly shelf thing.
It served it's purpose though.
This is where the old black
dresser sat ...my Mr Fixit will
build a built in cabinet in this space.
I'm still working on the design
but I think it will be much better than
the dresser.
BEAD BOARD!
We're actually further along than
these pictures show.
Maybe by the end of the weekend we'll be done
but I'm not holding my breath ;)
CROWN MOLDING!
And this is where our new sink
will sit....can't wait to
see it in place.
I think you'll like it ;)
I know I will.
I'm hooking up with Amy over at
Verde Farm for
I hope you'll hop on over and say Hi to Amy
and have fun visiting all the
other Farm Friends
taking part.
Have a great weekend!
Maura :)
  1. Love, love LOVE your abandoned farm photos. So beautiful and I always think the SAME thing. Abandoned houses make me sad.
    I can see the vision on your bathroom. We have the same gig right down to the curtained shelves but I am a sucker for good beadboard so it's going to look fantastic!
  4. Hi Maura,
    Oh, the bathroom has so much old charm and character. It will be beautiful when you are finished.
    Oh no, here comes trouble....
    Hi Miss Maura,
    Gee, it's been a long time since I talked with you - sorry about that. I just love your farm, in fact, I am available to spend the summer with you. Let me know, or "my people can call your people"....giggle. (o:
  6. And those old farms ~ it's so sad that people walk away from them and we work so hard to create one.
  7. I pass by an abandoned farm every week, too, and wonder what its story was and what will happen to it. I'm fascinated by barn styles and wonder about what the big, square barn was used for. It's the only original building left on the property and the fields are full of daisies in summer (poor fertility), but I do hope someone buys it and does something wonderful (and not too "modern") with it!
  8. The bathroom is going to be wonderful when it's complete! I love beadboard!
    That old farm would make an interesting place for artists to sketch.
  9. Our bathroom is still not tiled or even plastered. Bits of masonry and brick fall off into the water when I take a bath LOL
    Looking forward to seeing your progress.
  10. Love the pictures of the old farmstead. Wonder what happened to cause them to all walk away.
    Your bathroom has all the signs of a great beginning. Isn't it inconvienent with out the bathroom sink. There's just something wierd about brushing teeth in a kitchen sink. Good luck with the remodel.
  11. Such a sad sight, that old farm. If barnwood could talk I bet it would have a lot of tales to tell.
    The bathroom is coming along great! I love the beadboard. Can't wait to see it once it's completed.
    Have a wonderful weekend.
  12. We had beadboard in our upstairs bathroom in our home in the country. We furnished it quite inexpensively through the generosity of our middle son for our old pedestal sink, and his friend who had a claw-footed tub in his basement he wanted to get rid of. We bought the toilet and accessories. Nice, eh?
    We didn't farm, but we were surrounded by fields. ~sigh~
  14. The abandoned farmstead is so sad! It seems such a shame that someone doesn't want places like this any more and they just fade away.
    And on a much happier note, your bathroom is going to be fabulous! I love that you are putting beadboard on the ceiling too! My front porch is enclosed and has the original beadboard ceiling (and light fixture) which I love! Cannot wait to see it all finished. But I have to ask, from a single bathroom that also needs to be remodeled household, what are you doing for a bathroom in the meantime?
    Enjoy the weekend,
    ~Chris
  17. We to have a couple of abandoned farms near us and hubby and I always wonder what the story is.
    I can hardly wait to see the your new bathroom.....how exciting! Our old farmhouse only had 1 bathroom when we moved here, we lucked out by having an empty storage room right above our exsisting bathroom, so plumbing was easy.... After 3 years living here we added an upstairs bathroom, which is great when company comes!
  21. We have so many places around here just like that! Usually the family member has died off and someone inherited the property and just lets it sit. (or rot...)So sad, isn't it.
  24. It is so sad to see farms fall into disrepair, but as long as there is a visible trace of them, they're still with us. It's once they're gone completely, I wonder how future generations will be able to appreciate what once was.
    Looking forward to seeing your bathroom redo all wrapped up. I know it will be a treat! : )
  25. Just found your blog through APPLESTONE COTTGAGE. Can't wait to check it out! We just finished a bathroom redo...what a headache! Love the old farm pictures. I often see old homes and wonder what their story is. What happened to the family who lived there? Why didn't someone take care of the place? What happy memories lie inside? Good luck on finishing up your bath...I'll have to come back and check it out.
  27. I love old farmhouses too...I wonder about the families that lived there. It makes me a bit sad. If they're close to the road, I'll even take a quick peek around inside, if it's safe. And on the bathroom...yay! That's on my wish list for this year too once the kids are out of school...must...have...new...bathroom! Can't wait to see how yours is progressing! -Mary
  28. I know, it always makes me sad when I see abandoned farm/homesteads in the country. And I wonder about their past lives too. Just last week I discovered a "new" abandoned farm home only a few miles from us, this due to part of our road being closed and our having to detour. At least being forced to take the detour takes me down new roads. :)
    And I know I'm going to love your bathroom when it's done, esp because I just love beadboard!! Can't wait to see your pics later! I can imagine just how excited you are and how happy you will be when it's done.
    It is good to have stopped by and see your wonderful blog. I love the post about the abandoned farmsteads... just last week I was on a looooonnnnng drive to Wyoming and saw many throughout the midwest and I am filled with wonder when I see them. I wonder who lived there, what their ancestors went through to get to that place and where their great grandchildren are now and what they are doing. I see history and legacy when I see those farms... they had to have come from a line of hard working, tenacious, and determined people to have survived those days. Fascinating. Inspiring. Wonder.
    great post!
