What is it about stone homes and cottages that makes
us love them so much?
They are stone buildings...hard and cold!
Is it the feeling of permanence that we get when we see those beautiful stone walls and chimneys?
How can a building so solid make us feel all warm and cozy?
Maybe its the quaint shapes of some of the structures.
In some cases maybe it's the simple lines with texture that we admire.
Love the roofline of this cottage above and the texture of the stones. Can you imagine how
the ceiling in the upper bedrooms would be!
This beautiful stone house above may be plain but look at the wonderful texture and colors of the walls and the random use of stone size!

Imagine sitting out on that deck and looking out at the water with a cup of coffee or tea in your hand watching the sunrise in the morning. Or how about a wonderful glass of wine watching the sunset?
Awesome.
I hear the loons already.
Even if stone houses look a little cold...I wouldn't mind one bit if I could come in and sit in front of something like this....

I've lived in a stone cottage, cold they are, but incredibly beautiful !
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of fieldstone homes here in Tennessee, they always remind me of 'home' in England, and want to peek inside, and share tea.
Such lovely stone cottages, and yes, I would pack my bags right now if the opportunity arose. ;) The feeling of being surrounded by something dug from the ground, makes me feel at home.

Oh Maura, they were all so lovely (well the one in Portugal was different). I love stone walls, paths, homes, etc. I'm with you I could live in that one house all day long too-I can hear the loons too-LOL!!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. For me it's something from the past. A time when life wasn't necessarily easier but I believe it was the simple way of life. It wasn't complicated, right was right and wrong was wrong and not acceptable.

ReplyDeleteYes I would live in a stone cottage. I love stone and stone work and the history behind it. But here in MissouREE I would have to have a big ol fireplace in the family room. Oh, and in the kitchen. And the bedroom. Well, dang! and on the porch for Dec and Jan! And a fireplace in the bathrooms, wow that would be a good thing! You found some beautiful stone homes Maura. My favorite is the second one, love that arch and I would need a teeny bit more space added on AND a PORCH!

I've always loved the quaint, cozy appearance of stone homes. And that last one... I remember loving the English cottage that Cameron Diaz holiday'd at in The Holiday. I know it was a fluff movie, but I really enjoyed it. :)

Oh Maura, yes, yes, yes. I love stone cottages. They remind me of fairy tales and lands of imagination. Little, magical cottages in the woods where ferries live and piglets and people that love animals :)

ReplyDeleteOh, I agree... they are absolutely fabulous! Love them all! On one of our drives to the house there is a little cottage and it has a stoned ell and it so makes the house. Turns this very ordinary house into something very special! Everytime I drive by I have do go really slow so I can take it in!!

Your pictures are absolutely breathtaking and I'm so glad to find other people for whom having a stone cottage would be like living a faery tale! Something in each picture helps me to steal away from my current city-bound life and imagine cups of tea or cocoa in front of a wood stove or roaring fireplace. Naturally, stone is pretty cold, but, again, like some of your other posters, it is the constancy and permanence of it that attracts the eye and soul. Thank you.
